Charlotte Mason Flair is one way I’d describe our hands on learning style. True Charlotte Mason style means more writing and copywork than we typically do in our homeschool. This year, we’re doing a bit more along the Charlotte Mason lines, to complement our hands on learning.
Charlotte Mason Flair – Hands on Learning Style
Charlotte Maria Shaw Mason (1 January 1842 – 16 January 1923) was a British educator in England at the turn of the twentieth century. Her revolutionary methods led to a shift from utilitarian education to the education of a child upon living ideas.
Two key mottos taken from Charlotte Mason principles are “Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life” and “Education is the science of relations.” She believed that children were born persons and should be respected as such; they should also be taught the Way of the Will and the Way of Reason. Her motto for students was “I am, I can, I ought, I will.”
Mason claimed that usual education books were “written down” to children. Today we call that “dumbing down”. She believed that teachers should make use of “living books”; that is, books that are “written by a person with a passion for the topic and a broad command of the language as well as the ability to write in an engaging, literary style while communicating great ideas rather than mere facts.” The size of the book is not as important as the content and style- it should be alive and engaging. Our Hands on Learning Homeschool
In our homeschool of three boys, we’ve leaned more towards a hands on learning style, but with a Charlotte Mason flair. I agree with much of the philosophy behind her method. We’ve just adapted it to meet our personal needs and learning style.
Like Charlotte Mason, we use mostly Living Books in our homeschool. My children respond well to the “real book” learning. We’ve spent countless hours reading out loud and discussing the books we read. We love to research information on the topics we’re interested in, which is what led us to a Unit Study method. Combining unit studies, living books, and hands on learning projects with field trips . . . is a perfect fit for our family.
Implementing a lifestyle of learning is what we love most. Although, we do spend time officially homeschooling, we enjoy an atmosphere of learning, adventure, and discovery that instills a love of learning. Our children are able to pursue studies they are interested in, and we use those topics to inspire more learning fun.
Freebie Charlotte Mason Style Copywork and Handwriting
Using quality writing for copywork introduces children to good literature, as well as exposing them to excellent writing style. I’ve created the ocean themed freebie for you to do just that. Poem “Oh Sea” by Ernestine Northover is the basis with several choices. Use copywork pages and/or primary print, or cursive sheets.
Additionally, you can put the blank notebooking pages to use by having children write their own poems or using them for nature notebooking. Have children sit in the yard or park and make observations.
