Our children were born with a natural curiosity about the world around them. Tapping into this VALUABLE resource within them is critical to effective teaching at home. The brilliant thing is that we don’t have to CREATE this phenomenon but only need to reach them at that level.
Help them learn to look closely at the world around them with the curiosity and interest which God has instilled.
Job 12: 7-9 “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?”
You may have noticed that our Adventures Unit Studies are based off of animals. The reason behind this is that kids, pretty much across the board, are drawn to animals. They love to see animals, read about them, draw them, and learn about them.
Animals have a way of tapping into the natural curiosity that kids are born with!
But, using animals as a jumping off point to gain excitement and interest, does not mean that animals are all they learn about. We simply use God’s wonderful creatures to get the attention of our students. In this way, we inspire them to desire to learn more!
For example, our Bald Eagle Unit Study will capture their interest with fun facts, pictures and information (even a live baby eagle camera) right off the bat. Then they will learn the history behind the Bald Eagle & why it was chosen to represent the United States of America. They will learn why Benjamin Franklin wanted the wild turkey to represent us because he didn’t believe bald eagles had enough character.
Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” ~ Plato
They will use a map or atlas (and enclosed maps) to find Washington DC and learn about the other icons of our country. Students even have a tea party and learn proper tea etiquette while reading about First Lady Dolley Madison and her famous White House Tea Parties.
You see, learning really is fun! Students relate to and remember the material. They learn to research and to take notes on the most important information. Animals inspire kids to dig in and learn more.

John James Audubon was also born with a natural curiosity. He LOVED observing nature, especially birds. He valued the role they play in the environment around them. He identified 25 new species of birds!
Audubon was notable for his expansive studies to document all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats.
Hunting, fishing, drawing, and music occupied my every moment. Cares I knew not, & cared naught about them.” ~ John J Audubon
