Wonderfully Made: God’s Story of Life from Conception to Birth by Danika Cooley – hardcover $9.99 value
Wonderfully made is an excellent book that introduces a young child to the wonder of God’s creation – the wonder and miracle of birth. Teach Your Kids About Sex as God Intended – while the book won’t get into detail about sex, it is a great introduction. It will lay the foundation for further discussion. Wonderfully Made – from conception in the womb through the nine months within the mother’s womb Danika Cooley takes us on a journey of discovery… the discovery of life.
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13
Our Experience with Wonderfully Made – Adopted Perspective
As the mother of an adopted son, I was a little bit worried about the focus of the Wonderfully Made book as it shares the precious connection between mother and baby. I wanted to be able to share with him an biblical introduction to a godly perspective on conception, but I worried about the language used such as “I would be pregnant for 40 weeks” and “my womb”. Silly me, I really didn’t need to worry. I actually did a little tweaking as I read this beautiful story out loud. Instead of saying “my womb” I said “the womb” and “the belly”.
Instead of reading “this week we saw a picture of you on a machine called an ultrasound”, I said, “this week a machine called an ultrasound was able to take a picture of you”. By making small changes like those in a few strategic places in the book, the focus was on the miracle of his life and development of his wonderfully made body – and not on the fact that he had a different birth mother. As a matter of fact, I was able to personalize parts of the story & tell him that “at this stage, I was waking up in the night praying and asking God to protect you and to make you healthy and strong” – “I loved you before I ever knew you”.
The Scripture verses chosen by author Danika Cooley did a fantastic job of reinforcing the scientific information about conception and development. Most of all, they put a real focus on the miracle of birth and the fact that God had His loving hands on each stage of the babies growth.
It is not only a perfect biblical introduction to sex, but a precious look at how God Himself knits together the framework of each human being. It was a reminder that God knows him, loves him, has protected him & has a very specific plan for his life.
Each week of growth and development leading up to birth is explained in a way that is simple for children to understand. My son knew that this book was written by a friend of mine. As we read through such details as how the eyeballs moved up and down at week eighteen – he was amazed and asked, “how does she know?” Danika is just really smart like that – haha! I explained that scientists now can see detailed information throughout the growth stages of the baby. Each and every little person is a true miracle designed by God!
I could see the delight and interest as his eyes sparkled when we read about each week of growth and all the details of the human body. I loved bearing witness to the connection that was made for my son as we read about how God knew every detail of his being. God knew long before I did that our Spencer would be a talented fishermen. He would have blue eyes, and be a terrific artist.
I could see the wheels turning, and the little smile showed me that he was taking pride in the knowledge that God has indeed formed, shaped and planed his life. Wonderfully Made is a great resource to teach children about godly sex and the scientific development of human life – but that God has a purpose for them.
I think maybe especially as an adopted child, it is important for him to understand who he is. He was no accident. God has a purpose for him and he is Wonderfully Made! At the end of the book, kids are invited to become adopted into the family of Christ. From beginning to end, Wonderfully Made is a delightful and godly resource for teaching your children.
