Creative Homeschooling: Ocean Themed Learning
Ocean themed learning is an inspiring fun topic to use with your homeschool students as there are many fascinating and wonderful animals swimming, floating and crawling around our oceans. It doesn’t have to be summertime to use these creatures for everyday exploring fun.
How to Homeschool with Ocean Themed Learning
Pick out a few books to read together according to your child’s age group. I use a variety, a couple for them to read themselves, and a couple for reading out loud together.
(Those last two Ocean and World of Animals – are specifically Christian based teaching resources) Other favorite resources that I use for reference and for teaching materials include most anything by my friend Gary Parker of Master Books and Apologia Science.
My boys will practice their reading skills on our ocean animal of choice. I will read out loud about the science from fun books and a chapter or two from my reference resources – like the ones listed above. I pull spelling words, vocabulary and more from the books we are reading.
We include phonics review for my son with dyslexia to have continual review. We pull out a map and look up where our subject animal comes from (I choose different states and countries to keep us learning about various locations from around the globe).
We will then study about that culture, some of the history – maybe cook a meal, do some art or other fun hands on learning projects. I will pull bible verses out (often that refer to God’s creation or other related topic) and use them for handwriting practice.
We factor in fun worksheets of the same theme and take nature walks or go to an aquarium or park to search for the animal OR another (mammal, fish, bird, reptile or amphibian) to compare and contrast it with.
Teaching in this way offers us the opportunity to get out and explore together, it makes hands on learning fun, and makes it possible to teach all ages together!
More About Creating Unit Studies
For years, the learning process described above is how we have created our unit studies. It has inspired my boys to enjoy learning and to view these exploring activities as an adventure. They are developing life long habits of everyday exploring and learning about the world around them – and it’s all because we’ve used their natural curiosity and themes, like ocean themed learning to instill in them a desire to know, learn and grow while seeing it all as an adventure!
You can create your own unit studies by following a similar format – or take advantage of those we’ve already created. Our unit studies are designed for all ages in the family! Click the ad below to explore the options.
