Creative Homeschooling with Nature Walks and Flowers
with FREEBIE Notebooking Pages!
We love our nature walks and try to make it a regular part of creative homeschooling. Spending time in nature, quietly observing the flora and fauna, sketching and note-taking are an important part of nature science. These things make nature walks extremely valuable to the homeschool family.
When you use a pair of binoculars or a magnifying glass to take a closer look, take notes in a nature journal and answer simple questions like what, where, how, and why . . . you are gathering scientific data. It is a creative way to make homeschool fun and effective.
How to Use Flower Notebooking Pages
On your nature walk, you’ll want to bring a sketch book or nature journal. When you see pretty weeds or flowers along the way, take the time to stop and look closely. Observe what is living in and among them. Use a camera to take pictures.
Sketch what you see. Your drawings can be simple – they are for you, they are not to be graded or judged. The more practice you get, the better you will like the drawings but simple is the way to start. Make a few notes about the color, and the environment around the plants.
Look up weeds, wildflowers, and flowers in a field guide (like this one by Peterson) to get common and scientific names. Other information to add to notebooking pages can include location, soil type, and habitat description. Find out what animals and bugs eat the plant, or uses for humans.
