Traveling is one of our favorite ways to explore and learn about the world around us. Homeschool convention season is a great opportunity to visit, work, and enjoy the wonderful Teach Them Diligently conventions. We are also on a budget so that I can stay home and teach our boys, therefore finding ways to save money on the road is critical.
Booking the Rooms
When I go to book our hotel room at a homeschool convention – I go through my SWAGBUCKS account to my Choice Hotels account. I then search for hotels near the convention site & compare prices. It can be advantageous to book through the TTD hotel (saving BIG on rooms that are otherwise far too expensive for our budget & being right on site with access to our room and no extra parking fee is a bonus) BUT, sometimes I need to save even more and therefore I will shop around with my Choice membership.
Choice is free to join and I earn free nights that can be used during other conventions or other trips.
SWAGBUCKS gives me points for going through their link to get there and I change those points into gift cards for Amazon, Panera Bread, Walmart, Target, and even Paypal!
I earn more points by using the SWAGBUCKS special tool bar to search for field trips for us to stop and enjoy all the way to the conventions and home again. Currently, I have about $20 of free money via gift card waiting on me to use. You can get bonus points at sign up when you click the link that says “I have a sign up code”: enter AdventuresHS and earn a bonus 70 Swagbucks to get you started.
We join our local science center that is on the ASTC.org list and get free access to hundreds of museums (history & science) all across the country. I also ask for a homeschool discount when I join and get 50% off! Additionally, we look for parks and monuments along the way where we can stop and stretch our legs or spend the night for an extra adventure. We’ve explored caves in North Florida, learned about Pioneer life at the GA Museum of Agriculture, snow skiing for the last spring ski at Sugar Mountain with March Madness rates, been white water rafting in Cumberland Gap, and so much more! We love convention season!
Feeding the Family
FOOD is another big issue on the road. While traveling, we enjoy a roast, right in our hotel room!
